Protein Timing Is Overrated. Total Intake Isn't.

The 30-minute anabolic window made for great marketing and bad science. Current research is clear: total daily protein intake dwarfs timing in importance. If you're not hitting 0.7-1g per pound of bodyweight per day, no shaker-bottle sprint to the locker room will save you.

That said, timing isn't worthless—it's just third on the priority list, behind total intake and protein quality. Distributing your intake across 3-5 feedings of 25-50g each keeps muscle protein synthesis elevated through the day, which beats cramming 150g into one evening feast.

Where does a post-workout shake actually matter? Convenience and compliance. After a hard session, appetite is suppressed and whole food is a chore. 25g of fast-absorbing whey is the easiest rep you'll do all day. That's why it's a staple—not magic, just friction removal.

Train fasted in the morning? Then the window matters a little more—you're coming off an overnight catabolic stretch. Get protein in within an hour or two. Train fed in the afternoon? Relax. The meal you ate at lunch is still feeding the recovery.

The hierarchy: 1) total daily protein, 2) protein quality (leucine content), 3) distribution, 4) timing. Master them in order. Most people obsess over #4 while failing #1.
